The Local Programs Committee and the Continuing Education Committee are two of the three society committees that provide educational programs for clinicians. The third is the Program Committee. Until two years ago the expected task of Local Programs was to provide one to three hour programs for clinicians within an hour and a half of the location of the event. The Continuing Education Committee was responsible for multi-session educational offerings. The Program Committee's work is to provide one or two all-day events per year with a nationally known speaker. During the last two years the first two committees have combined their work to provide maximum flexibility for the types and locations of programs the society offers. Of course, continuing education credits are earned for attendance at these programs.
During the last academic year the two committees have provided programs on a variety of clinical subjects in the Triangle area and in various cities and towns around the state as requested by those areas. In the recent past, we have sponsored programs in Wilmington on Eating Disorders, Complex Dissociative Disorders and on Play Therapy; in New Bern on The Unfinished Business of Divorce; in Greenville on Play Therapy; in Chapel Hill on Legal Issues for Clinical Social Workers, on Intermittent Therapy and on Midlife Divorce; in Fayetteville on Clinical Supervision; in Raleigh on Men and Their Emotional Growth and on The Unfinished Business of Divorce. The programs are open to all mental health clinicians and to Clinical Social Work Society members at a reduced rate. The Western Regional Chapter in the Asheville area has grown tremendously in the last several years and their education committee has sponsored several excellent programs for society members in that area.
We also have sub-committees that offer monthly or bi-monthly free clinical programs for society members in the Triangle area. These "Monthly Gatherings," as they have come to be called, last about 1 1/2 hours and provide a wide variety and a high quality of educational offerings. In addition, they offer one hour of C.E. credit and an opportunity for the area clinicians to get to know and to consult each other on clinical issues, including issues specific to their geographic area and to learn each others' specialities for mutual referrals.
In the interest of strengthening the Clinical Society, we strive to expand the number of regional chapters to better provide services to members. If you would like to have a regional chapter in your area, please contact the Society President, Constantine Kledaras, kledaras@mailcenter.campbell.edu).
Programs for this fall will include "Angry and Aggressive Behavior Throughout the Lifespan" with Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D. on Saturday, November 16, 2002. The committees invite members to send their suggestions and requests for particular programs.
The Local Programs and Continuing Education Committees welcome new members to help plan and provide superior educational programs. The task of the committees is to find timely topics of interest to members and to identify experts on those topics. Society members who can provide stimulating post-graduate and advanced educational experiences for clinicians typically represent our presenters. The committee meetings are held in Chapel Hill or Raleigh, although members from around the state are invited to join the committees. By participating, committee members will receive an agenda, minutes, and are able to offer their ideas and suggestions by telephone or by email to the committee chairs. The current chair for the next year is Christine Tronge (lcsw@magicaldesk.com; 919-575-2116).
