Treating traumatized children can be challenging and perplexing for even the most seasoned clinician. The workshop session will address core principles and strategies used in treating the traumatized child. The differences between single incident and complex relational trauma will be addressed, as well as some different therapeutic modalities and styles, and some ways to think about navigating through different approaches. A portion of the workshop will allow for discussion of cases.
NCSCSW member, Gael McCarthy, will present on promoting attachment between children and their caregivers, particularly those children in adoptive, foster or kinship care. Her workshop "Promoting Secure Child-Caregiver Relationships: the Whys, the Hows and the Challenges" developed from her doctoral dissertation findings and her many years of clinical experience working with children and families. She will present on Saturday October 20 at the UNC School of Social Work 9:00-11:30.
