Social workers are obligated to welcome Syrian refugees by professional ethics and NASW directives to support those displaced. Due to the ongoing crisis, concern around Syrian refugees should be at the forefront of the profession.  North Carolina was amongst the top 10 states where Syrians were resettled prior to the Muslim Ban, and it is imperative to prepare for arrivals given the recent presidential administration change. This presentation offers insight into the needs, strengths, and experiences of Syrian women with refugee status while providing opportunities for social workers to gain understanding of bias, oppression, and cultural perspectives in this practice area. Common traumatic experiences and clinical presentations will be addressed as well as culturally appropriate responses to care.

This conference provides 2 contact hours of continuing education credit in Ethics for social workers. Certificates will be provided following the training.

Biography

Dr. Kayte Thomas (she/hers), PhD., LCSW, has focused much of her social work career on refugee issues. Her BSW internship was completed in refugee resettlement which led to employment in job development for refugees. Her MSW capstone was a program evaluation of rapid employment with refugees, and her doctoral research was focused on issues pertaining to Syrian women with refugee status. As an LCSW, her expertise lies in trauma and resiliency, motherhood issues, and attachment formation. She is a certified clinical trauma professional and integrative medicine mental health provider. Dr. Thomas is currently an associate professor at Carroll College in the online MSW program.
